Landsoldatpladsen - a central square with special status

Landsoldatpladsen is Fredericia's most significant square!

The special square is centrally located in Fredericia right next to attractions such as Fredericia Vold, the White Water Tower and the Prince's Gate. Landsoldatpladsen is Fredericia's meeting point and is named after a very special figure.

Named after Fredericia's important land soldier

Landsoldatpladsen is named after the statue The Brave Country Soldier, which is the focal point of the square. The Brave Landsoldat - or simply the Landsoldat in colloquial speech - is world famous for being the first memorial to the private soldier, erected in Battle of Fredericia in 1849.

The Land Soldier is Fredericia's most important landmark, and the Land Soldier Square therefore has a very special meaning in Fredericia.

Landsoldatpladsen is also located The Old Guard, where a military guard was established right up until 1934, as well as the beautiful Prince's Port, which was the original and then only way in and out of the fortress city.

Renovation in 2023: New look for Landsoldatpladsen

In April 2023, the renovation of Landsoldatpladsen was completed and the square was inaugurated at an opening party. The renovation has meant an expansion of the square towards Danmarksgade and a re-establishment of a long seating board along the square.

The important square now looks even better with close-cut grass and cobblestones and a wide promenade that provides better access for pedestrians and wheelchair users.

The money for the renovation of Landsoldatpladsen has been donated by the AP Møller Foundation. The project is part of a larger one revitalization of Fredericia Vold.

Events and activities at Landsoldatpladsen

Landsoldatpladsen is regularly used for various events and activities.

Dancing students from Fredericia Gymnasium

The students from Fredericia High School, for example, have a tradition of meeting at the high school when the last student puts on their cap, and go in a group to Landsoldatpladsen. Here they walk and dance in a chain around the Land Soldier while singing the Latin student song Gaudeamus igitur.

Also in connection with Fredericia's historical past and anniversaries such as The fortress days the space is used particularly actively.

The fortress days with Landsoldatpladsen in the centre

For the Fortress Days in Fredericia, Landsoldatpladsen plays a very central role. Shift shifts will be re-established by, among other things, The Old Guard and the Land Soldier, and there is a tradition that the Land Soldier Square is decorated with red and white flowers by the city's citizens and guests.

Landsoldatpladsen is also the starting point for the 5th of July torchlight procession and several of the 6th of July processions stop at the square at Den Trapre Landsoldat, where speeches are given.
