The city's live scene

The Tøjhuset venue is a popular music and cultural venue in the heart of Fredericia. Tøjhuset hosts over 200 concerts, stand-up shows, cultural events and other events a year, and forms together with the city's second venue The exercise house the setting for the city's live scene. In Tøjhuset's event calendar you will find a wide selection of genres and event types; there is something for every taste and age group!

The daily operation of the Tøjhuset is managed by the user association Fredericia Live and a corps of around 100 fantastic volunteers who, together with the local associations that use the venue, are responsible for the holding and implementation of all the Tøjhuset's events. You can find an overview of the many local associations affiliated with Tøjhuset, here !

The history of the clothing house

The building, known today as Tøjhuset, was built in 1853 and was originally to be used as a sugar factory. However, this was not a success, and in 1863 the military therefore bought the buildings for a military depot. Until 1982, the building was used to store military clothing and equipment, which gave the building its name Tøjhuset.

In 1983, the Tøjhuset is listed. In the meantime, local music associations have started to use the empty premises for concerts and have discovered that Tøjhuset is particularly well suited for this, and at the same time there has been a flourishing of the local music environment, which causes a number of associations to come together for a proposal to Fredericia Municipality to buy Tøjhuset as a concert venue. However, Fredericia Municipality rejects this call, as they are already in the process of establishing other premises in the city, Det Bruunske Pakhus, as the city's music and culture venue.

It will therefore be a private company that buys the building in 1986. The clothing house is renovated and used as office space until the end of the 1990s.

At the end of the 1990s, Fredericia Municipality buys Tøjhuset, which is then fitted out for classical music concerts and used by the local classical music associations. Up through the 2000s, however, Det Bruunske Parkhus begins to become too small for the ever-growing music and cultural environment in the city, and the local user association, together with Fredericia Municipality, begins to look around for new and larger premises. The choice falls on Tøjhuset, which after a renovation will open as the city's new music and culture center in 2017.
