Denmark's only religious sanctuary

Did you know that Fredericia had freedom of religion long before the rest of Europe? Join us on a guided tour in the footsteps of religious freedom, and hear much more about it the royal fortress citys completely unique status as a religious sanctuary.

In 1674, King Christian the 5th decided to grant Fredericia a very special privilege: Freedom of Religion. Freedom of religion attracted citizens from all over Europe, and over time the fortress city became, among other things, to accommodate both a Jewish congregation and become home to expelled French Huguenots.

Guided tour about Fredericia's religious diversity

The guided tour about Fredericia's special religious status is led by a knowledgeable guide who will make you more knowledgeable about this special part of the fortress city's history.

On the tour, the guide will tell much more about why religious freedom was granted to Fredericia in particular, what significance this had for the city's development, and how the population groups that arrived have left their mark on the city right up to today.

The guided tour takes place on foot inside The ramparts in the historic city center of Fredericia. Along the way, you will pass several of Fredericia's churches and the city's Jewish burial ground, which is the only burial ground outside of Copenhagen.
